Choosing the Right Filter
Use the Spectrum Smart Filter Finder™ to search your telescope, binoculars, spotting scope, or camera lens. If your device isn't listed, measure the outside diameter of the front opening and compare it to our sizing guide. You can also contact us and our team will help you choose the correct fit.
No problem. Simply measure the outside diameter of your device and use our measurement guide. If you're still unsure, contact Spectrum with your make, model, measurements, or photos and we'll personally recommend the correct filter.
We generally recommend ordering the next size larger than your measured outside diameter to ensure a secure fit. Solar filters should fit snugly without forcing them onto the device.
Safety
Yes. Spectrum solar filters are designed specifically for direct solar observation when properly installed and secured before viewing the Sun. Always inspect your filter before each use and never observe the Sun through an unfiltered optical device.
Adult supervision is always recommended during solar observation. Make sure the filter is properly installed and secured before anyone views the Sun.
No. Finder scopes should remain capped or filtered separately during solar observation. Never look through an unfiltered finder scope at the Sun.
Glass vs Thin Film
Glass filters provide a durable design and a natural orange image of the Sun. Thin film filters are lightweight and often reveal exceptionally sharp solar detail with a white or bluish image, depending on the material used. Both are safe when used properly.
Choose glass if durability and ease of handling are your priorities. Choose thin film if you prefer the lightest option and maximum detail. Many experienced observers own both.
